Viennese now know: ‘It sucks when there’s a crash’ (Es ist deppert, wenn’s scheppert)

On behalf of the City of Vienna, DEMNER, MERLICEK & BERGMANN create a new campaign to enhance/ increase road safety in Vienna. The agency scored at the previous pitch and won the account.

Everyone is familiar with the typical situations of Viennese daily traffic: The traffic light seems to be stuck on red forever, the boss is calling for the third time in a row, your girlfriend is sending you a selfie of her latest outfit. One moment of carelessness and smash.

The new campaign ‘sucks when it crashes’ (“Deppert wenn’s scheppert”) points out to road users in a charming manner how small mistakes can have huge impacts.

It makes one think twice if picking up the phone while driving makes sense, even though the call can surely wait another moment. Or if it’s not smarter to stop riding the bicycle to type the text message, or if one’s own safety isn’t more important than crossing the street on red.

Mag. Iris Wrana, Director of Public Relations, MA46: ‘Everybody understands how important paying attention on the road is, but in everyday life it’s very easy to forget about it. Therefore accidents happen. We hope to raise awareness with this new campaign themed ‘Road/Traffic Safety’ and offer the Viennese public something to think about.’

The large-scale road safety campaign, which can be seen throughout Vienna since April 7th, includes billboards, citylights, print ads, radio spots and a microsite.
